Frequently Asked Questions We will feature some of the most frequently asked questions here to help inform you about UNLV's PSWRC. If your question is not featured here or if you need some further clarification, please email us at pswrc2010@gmail.com. Jump to Page: 1 2 3 4 5 .. Q: Can we tape the sides of the posterboard to the box for the geotechnical competition? A: If you look at item vi. on page 7 you can see that the rules state that "tape can only be placed on the front plane of the poster board, not on the sides or bottom. Tape cannot be used to increase the strength of the paper reinforcement." While we know that the rule is ambiguous, we have confirmed with a team that went to the national event that taping any part of your face/posterboard to the wall/box itself is not allowed. Q: How will scoring on the paper factor into the final score and how will the technical paper be scored? A: The paper competition will be scored 50/50 on the basis of the technical paper and the presentation. As for the paper scoring criteria we are using the national rules to judge the papers based on adherence to topic, use of original ideas and research, subject matter, spelling/grammar, and overall clarity/organization. Q: Where can we purchase sand similar to the sand with the soil properties you have for the geotechnical competition since they differ from the national competition? A: This information can be found on the Event Documents page, the link called Regional MSE Wall Information, under Geotechnical. Q: Are we allowed to construct our MSE wall beforehand or should we bring material to the conference? A: You will most definitely need to construct your plywood box before hand. You are also given the option to decorate it to show your school pride . . . kinda like canoe only smaller and non-concrete based :-) Q: For the geotechnical competition, how much "Soild Reinforcing" will you supply each team since we are not specifying before hand in a report? A: While there is no report, there is a presentation for the geotechnical event as outlined in the Geotechnical Addendum that we sent out earlier this year. The deadline to submit the dimensions is on March 26. This will give us time to cut every school's paper to their specified dimensions. Page eight of the GeoChallenge rules states how scoring will be executed with regards to the total paper areas requested. Also, our third mailer (located in the registration section on our website) has the schedule for when each school must present. Jump to Page: 1 2 3 4 5 .. |
