Other Interesting Facts About Las Vegas Over 39.2 million people visit Las Vegas each year. Seventeen of the 20 biggest hotels in the U.S. are in Las Vegas. Vegas Vic, the enormous neon cowboy that towers over Fremont Street, is the world's largest mechanical neon sign. Home to Nellis Air Force Base and the world famous Thunderbirds Air Force Demonstration Team. Hoover Dam dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935. First Atomic Test detonated at the Nevada Test Site in 1951. In 2004 the Strip dims its lights for President Ronald Reagan's passing. Other dignitaries to receive such a remembrance upon their passing have included President John F. Kennedy; Rat Pack members Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin; and George Burns. Las Vegas celebrated its Centennial year throughout 2005, beginning with the New Year's fireworks display. Las Vegas celebrated its 100th birthday on May 15, 2005, with the world's largest birthday cake and a recreation of the 1905 land auction that started the Las Vegas community as we know it today. Las Vegas mega resorts are common today, but the first major resort built on the Las Vegas Strip was the El Rancho in 1947. Elvis Presley performed in 837 consecutive sold out shows at the Las Vegas Hilton Casino. Construction workers on the Hoover Dam in 1933 were treated to a new invention, the Hard Hat. The Hard Hat was invented specifically for workers on the Hoover Dam. The largest single public works project in the history of the United States was the Hoover Dam, located about 40 miles from Las Vegas. Hoover Dam contains 3.25+ million cubic yards of concrete. The famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign was created in 1959. Since 1993, Las Vegas has had fourteen casinos imploded to make way for progress.
